Before the end of term I intend to do the following:
- Put together a vocabulary planner page - and recommend to other departments they try this out!
- I want to check out some of the websites recommended by others on this course and LondonGT - and disseminate to rest of school in next newsletter.
Next term I intend to:
- Parent links - further investigate how to increase these especially looking at how we can use parents' skills and knowledge as provision or mentors for G&T pupils
- G&T Work group meeting - discuss putting 'questions' into SOW; feedback on LondonGT course and look at how ideas can be used in departments;
- G&T mentoring - monitor mentoring of underachievers - is new system working??
- Put together a G&T termly newsletter which includes info, useful websites, competitions - puzzles, code breaking etc with prizes.
Till the end of term, I plan to put some ideas together and use them as starters. I like that puzzle used for Google recruitment!! Anyway, not much time left for the end of term! Yippee!
Back from holidays, I will be delivering some training sessions and start sharing ideas and info with my colleagues. I also plan to embed the 6 thinking hats in some of my lessons.
Eventually, I would like to start setting links with Hornsey girls' school and share schemes for g&T and plan for a project for next year. Anyone in the Haringay or Hackney borough would like to join in? Or any other girls'schools from other boroughs in London?
Before the end of the term I hope to collect as many resources from teacher tools as possible.
My focus for next term will be to:
1. Deliver the inset sessions that I have designed for my colleagues. Including an introduction to G&T and provision ideas.
2. I hope to continue provide resources via the school bulletin, o-drive and intranet website.
3. As soon as mock results come through, I intend to restart the A-Star League.
4. Organise some in-school activities for G&T
One of the first things i'm going to do is try one of the ideas I had when we were discussing staff training earlier today - develop a G&T good practice handbook. I plan to email all staff in my school and ask for one practical example of how they have implemented a G&T teaching strategy in their lessons. I can see that as it's the end of term everyone might be a bit peeved at any 'extra work' but i really think that this should be something that everyone could spend just 10mins doing but will provide a fab resource once i collate them all. Then it will hopefully be able to lead into the training i plan to do next term.
Training-wise, i'm going to be leading a SEN focus group meeting in January. I was a bit unsure about the exact focus as all staff have different levels of experience, but after discussion this morning, i think that the aim of it will be targetting underachieving gifted & talented year 9s. I hope to provide other teachers with practical suggestions that they can take away, disseminate to their departments, and also use straight away. I'm also going to try to get some G&T students to come to the meeting to speak to us about their ideas on G&T provision.
Before the end of term I will be meeting with GT pupils in year 9 and 11 and would like to meet with the GT reps in all departments if we have time!!! This is to check in with everyone and to lt them know what to expect next term.
Next term the study skills programs for both year groups will be up and running and I hope to get the Yr12s should be mentoring Yr10s...
I will be delivering training to our NQTs and beginning teachers so I need to plan this and work out where to focus and how to differentiate with the different levels of experience and knowledge. I need to do work on getting ideas for inclusion out there and getting the school better at sharing ideas between departments and keystages - especially with our primary sector.
And I really like the idea of having a weekly bulletin highlighting good practise and good work - it's just come to me that everyone should be involved so that students and teachers can nominate themselves and each other to be included... maybe on a 4 times termly basis...
NEXT TERM
Ensure all maths teachers know who G&T pupils are.
Utilise revision days for A to A* for students in current yr 11.
As well as conventional homework (done on paper /ex books) use the homwork facility on Mymaths.co.uk to set more challenging tasks / extension activities for G&T students.
Organise a meeting with parents of G&T maths pupils.
A-level - my lessons are becoming a bit stale. I hope to introduce some more opportunities for discussion. So me good ideas today - 'louder' pupils discuss a problem, quieter pupils observe and feedback.
Work of the week - great idea! Will hopefullly introduce for each of my classes.
next steps for me will to modify my use of the thinking hats and look to at how to use them for marking.
Plans for next term - Well we do not offer any training for NQT's so I shall recommend that it becomes part of the training programme.
I shall use the flash presentation at the next G&T meeting in Jan. I want to all the staff to have access to all the questioning techniques
Before the end of term???? I think I'll look into organising department G&T reps (alongise the head of G&T) to start next term so that we can easily disseminate this information throughout the school. We can look at subject specific development and create action plans so that we are clearly focussing on the needs of individualy departments/teachers and students.
I'd also like to create some extensive revision Christmas programmes for top sets which includes enrichment opportunities so that we can develop general and specific skills that can be applied to any text etc., but that can also be taken to A Level.
I'm also going to put a pack together to go into the school bulletin which feeds back on this entire session and all the little nuggets and gems of information that can be applied department wide.
I think that's probably all I can manage before the end of term!
Before we break up for holiday order some green pens so I am able to immediately implement the 'green pen' marking that Caroline suggested.
Next term speak to senior leaders about critical thinking AS level for KS4 G and T. Further investigate Specialist Schools Trust Mandarin programme.
Attempt to imbed and then share more thinking skills and learning to learn within KS3.
Try and teach 'The Tempest' without loosing my mind and while trialling different L2L strategies.
Hope you've considered your children who suffer from colour blindness? As one of the misunderstood and neglected colour blindness sufferers in the world I would not know if the marking was done in green, red or brown.
Am planning to form starters out of some of the ideas I have seen today, including the Google recruitment process. Next term, I would like to form a discussion group for parents, where parents can come in and discuss how they can support their gifted child.
I would also like to look at methods to prevent and assist underachievers in Maths, possibly mentoring.
To do list:
